Did you know that Arlington, Virginia is the smallest self-governing county in the United States, covering less than 26 square miles? We were excited to be back in the DMV area during peak cherry blossom season! For those unfamiliar, DMV refers to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, encompassing the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Situated on the Potomac River, Arlington is part of the DMV area and connected directly to Washington, D.C., by five bridges. Whether you’re planning a trip soon or simply dreaming of visiting, this guide will provide you with inside tips on what to see, do, and explore in Arlington.
Transportation
I recommend flying into DCA, which is technically located in Arlington, and less than two miles from the county’s Pentagon City neighborhood. The transportation options are convenient, so you won't need to rent a car to get around. You can use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft at any time without needing to worry about finding parking, or take advantage of the Metro system throughout the destination. However, please note that the metro does not operate 24 hours a day, but the trains run frequently, with stops approximately every several minutes.

Iconic Landmarks
National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial
A permanent outdoor tribute honoring the 184 lives lost at the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77 during the September 11th, 2001 attacks. 184 illuminated benches, each inscribed with a victim's name and arranged by age, create a powerful and moving display. This heart-wrenching reminder of the tragedy serves as a lasting testament to the enduring legacy of those who perished on that fateful day.
Arlington National Cemetery
The final resting place for veterans from every major conflict since the Revolutionary War. Steeped in history, the cemetery's grounds were once the estate of George Washington Parke Custis, George Washington's adopted grandson. Following a tax dispute with Robert E. Lee in 1864, the land became a poignant symbol of national unity, serving as a final resting place for American heroes ever since. Since the first military burial in 1864, over 400,000 individuals have been laid to rest here, their sacrifices forever etched in the hallowed grounds.
President John F. Kennedy Gravesite: Serves as a heartfelt tribute to the 35th leader of the United States. Assassinated on November 22, 1963, his legacy lives on at this powerful memorial. A simple yet striking gray tablet, inscribed with his name and years of life, stands at the center. Encircling it is a granite wall, where an eternal flame, ignited by Jacqueline Kennedy on the day of his funeral, has burned continuously ever since. President Kennedy's wife and their two children, who died in infancy, are buried nearby, adding to the profound historical significance of this hallowed site. The graves of Robert F. Kennedy and Senator Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy are there, as well.
Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial
An elegant Greek Revival-style mansion overlooks Arlington National Cemetery and Washington, D.C. Originally built by George Washington Parke Custis, Lee's father-in-law, the house became home to Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate States Army and his family for 30 years. Today, Arlington House serves as a memorial to both families, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.
Memorial Amphitheater: This outdoor venue has hosted numerous significant events like Veterans Day and Memorial Day commemorations, funerals, and memorial services. Its hallowed ground is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a symbolic grave for all unidentified war dead. It has become a place of national reverence, representing the collective memory of all who have served throughout American history. Witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place every hour. This solemn ritual features a formal handover, rifle inspection, and marching drill, paying tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by these heroes.
Netherlands Carillon
Standing tall at 127 feet, the Netherlands Carillon is a powerful symbol of international unity. This impressive tower houses a 53-bell carillon, a gift from the Netherlands to the United States in the 1950s. The carillon serves as a lasting expression of the Netherlands' profound gratitude for America's unwavering support during and after World War II. Today, the melodious chimes of the carillon resonate as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations, a reminder of the power of international cooperation and solidarity.
