Change Begins Inside
Overview
Spanish artist David de la Mano is best known for his minimalist murals and monochromatic imagery. He often uses silhouettes of trees as well as of men, women, or groups of people as narrative metaphors. Through this imagery, the artist lends poetic vision to the human condition. For this mural, De la Mano observes that the work has two potential readings. One interpretation could be about the capacity that we all possess to overcome difficult situations, and the hope, but also uncertainty, that this creates. The other possible meaning references the collective strength that can be achieved when a group of people come together, with everyone rowing in the same direction.
David de la Mano was born in Salamanca, Spain, and currently lives in Uruguay. He received a degree in Fine Art from the University of Salamanca and a Ph.D. in Public Art from the University of Valencia. Since the early 1990s, De la Mano has produced a number of projects including sculpture, installations, and land art. For the past eight years, he has focused primarily on murals and other public art projects. Prior to painting the mural here in Arlington, the artist created a mural for the Spanish Embassy in the foyer of the former residence of the Spanish ambassador in Washington, D.C.
